領導團隊發揮潛能(3)

   David說:「…當然,交流是雙方面的。他們也可以在約談中讓我知道公司或我可以做什麼,以便能更好地支持他們更有效地工作。」

 

  「除此之外呢?」范教練問。

 

  「我想起一個故事。有兩個工人正在烈日下砌磚。有個過路人問其中一位:『你在做甚麼?』他回答:『你瞎了嗎?看不到我正在辛苦地、重複枯燥地砌磚!我沒本事,只能做這種粗活兒!』路人又問另一個人。大汗淋漓的他回答說:『我在砌一堵牆,建造一座雄偉的主教堂。讓信徒們有個莊嚴神聖的地方朝拜,滋潤心靈。這教堂將會是這個城市的一個新地標、景點,會吸引很多觀光的遊客,為他們的旅程增添精彩。我很高興能為此作出貢獻。』」

 

  「那又如何呢?」范教練問。

 

  「所以我要讓他們知道他們的工作對公司的使命與目標是很重要的。只有在看到他們所做的,哪怕是跟客戶的一次會議、一通電話,所作的一份報表、一次商業演示,甚至是保持辦公室的整潔、安全,都是在作出貢獻,有助於整個公司團隊服務客戶,完成使命,達到目標。」

 

  「可以怎樣做到這一點呢?」

 

  「嗯,多溝通很重要。讓他們清晰公司的使命與目標。然後在日常工作中,多將他們所做的工作與公司的使命與目標相連起來;將具體行為融入大畫面之中。」

 

  「我還要以身作則,凡事百分百投入去做,致力營造積極樂觀的工作氛圍,自然容易感染他們。

 

  吸引人才不容易,要留住人才更是一項挑戰。所以多給他們提供學習與發展的機會是很關鍵的。栽培他們的目的,除了要提升公司的戰鬥力,是要讓他們知道公司器重他們,願意投資在他們身上。否則,他們容易跳槽。」

 

  “Of course, the interaction is a 2-way process.  They can also take the opportunity to let me know what else the company or I can do to better support them to work more effectively.” said David.

 

  “What else can you do?” asked Coach Michael.

 

  “That reminds me of a story.  Two workers were laying bricks under the scorching hot sun.  A passer-by asked one of them, “What are you doing?”

 

  He replied, “Are you blind or what?!  Can’t you see I am working my butt off laying bricks!!  Over, and over, and over again!  It’s so boring!  I am a good-for-nothing!  Serves me right to be doing this!” 

 

T  he passer-by asked the other worker the same question.

 

  With sweat large as beads streaming down, he answered, “I am building a wall which will become part of a majestic cathedral.  The Christians will have a holy and solemn place for worship to nourish their souls.  The cathedral will become a new landmark and a popular place of interest in this city.  It will attract many tourists and enrich their vacation experience.  I am very happy to be able to make a contribution towards it.”

 

  “What happens next?”

 

  “I want to make clear to my team the mission and goals of the company.  It’s only when they can see what they are doing -- be it attending a client meeting, making a phone call, writing a report, delivering a presentation, even keeping the workplace safe and clean -- they will know that they are all making contributions.  It would help the company serve our clients better, accomplish our mission and reach our business goals.”

 

  “And how can you make that happen?”

 

  “Oh, clear and prolific communication is key!  Clarity on our mission and goals and then link them to their daily tasks.  Connecting specific behaviours to the big picture.

 

  I want to walk the talk and do everything with a 100% commitment.  This will create a proactive and optimistic working atmosphere.  They would be able to feel it.

 

  It’s not easy to attract the right talents, even more challenging to keep those talents.  So it’s very important to provide more learning and development opportunities.  The purpose is two-fold: one is to increase the competitiveness of the company, and the other is to let them know that the company treasure them and are willing to invest in them.  Otherwise, we will risk losing them to our competitors.”
