Global bond sell-off hits Japan, 10-year JGB yield surges to highest since 1996

THE HONG KONG ECONOMIC TIMES, SPECIAL REPORT, 24TH: Japanese stocks resumed trading on Thursday after holidays, coinciding with a global bond sell-off, sending Japan's 10-year government bond yield soaring to the highest level since 1996.

After a three-day market holiday, Japan's 10-year bond yield rose 10 basis points to 3.075 percent on Thursday, the highest level since 1996. Yields across all maturities climbed, with the 5-year bond yield rising 9.5 basis points to 2.37 percent.

This move closely followed the intensified decline in U.S. Treasuries. Strong U.S. economic data coupled with weak demand at Treasury auctions pushed yields across most maturities to near 20-year highs.

Amid persistent inflation and fiscal concerns, investors are demanding higher compensation for holding Japanese government bonds, triggering this wave of sell-off. (rc)
